Red Bull Music Academy 2015 is nearly upon us. After heading east in 2014 for a month-long sensory overload in Tokyo, this year the Academy lands in Paris to celebrate the French capital's contribution to culture past, present and future. From October 25 to November 27, a studio team featuring Modeselektor, Thundercat and Just Blaze will mentor 61 participants at the Gaîté Lyrique. For the rest of us, though, there's an eye-popping line-up of events, installations and lectures.

To celebrate the Academy's first appearance in Europe since 2011, the 17th Red Bull Music Academy features some huge names. Notable artists who'll be lecturing and performing are Gallic techno pioneer Laurent Garnier, Parisian disco legend and recent star of Glastonbury Cerrone, and a man who gave the electronic-music revolution new impetus way back when, Jean-Michel Jarre.

Keeping things homegrown, Laurent Garnier’s much-loved Rex Club will be throwing a night that pitches house-music joker Mr Oizo alongside New York's L.I.E.S. imprint and wintry synth-pop obsessives Minimal Wave. Sexy Boy and one half of Air Nicolas Godin will be joined in a double bill by Stereolab's refined synth-pop ace, Lætitia Sadier.

From further afield comes Stephen O'Malley's doom merchants Sunn O))), south-central LA's modern jazzer Kamasi Washington and thrilling, post-rock-infused saxophonist Colin Stetson. That's just the tip of the iceberg, too.

Creators Defend Rights in Works of Art Located in Public Places

CISAC President and Vice-Presidents have written to the President of the European Parliament, to express their views on discussions concerning the use of works of art located in public places.

Jean Michel Jarre, Angélique Kidjo, Javed Akhtar, Marcelo Piñeyro, and Ousmane Sow expressed concerns with respect to the proposal of Pirate Party MEP Julia Reda to allow the use of photographs, video footage and other images of works which are permanently located in public places, without the prior authorisation of the creator and irrespective of the commercial nature of such uses. The proposal, which was originally included in MEP Reda’s report to the Legal Affairs Committee from January this year, was later revised to exclude commercial uses of such works without prior authorisation. This revision triggered an aggressive campaign against the amendment and against the interests of creators of public art.

In the letter, the creators called the European Parliament to safeguard the rights of authors against the erosion of the value of their works in favour of a limited number of big commercial stakeholders, who are building global businesses and amassing significant profit on the back of the authors’ community. They encouraged the European MEPs to adopt a decision that would take into consideration all interests involved, at its upcoming plenary session on 9 July.

The CISAC 2015 Activity Report

Released at CISAC's General Assembly, the 2015 Activity Report is now available. This tri-lingual, 45-page document presents an overview of the confederation’s activities during a very busy year.
The magazine style format opens with an editorial from CISAC President Jean-Michel Jarre and comments from the four Vice-Presidents.  The organisation's key figures on royalty collections show growth in many key areas, particularly for performing rights, which exceeded €6bn for the first time this year.

In a 'year at a glance' overview of the organisation's activities, global activities are summed up month-by-month, with a special report dedicated to CISAC’s participation to WIPO's General Assembly in September 2014 when creators took the stage to call for fair remuneration at the highest level.

A huge turnout of creators and CISAC members attends the annual General Assembly in Brussels today

It has been a year of change and of great achievements at CISAC.
This was the resounding message that CISAC member societies took away from today's 2015 General Assembly held in Brussels, Belgium.

With a new structure, bold strategy and renewed energy, the CISAC Secretariat is working in full force to support its members and four million creators it represents around the world.

CISAC President and electronic music composer, Jean Michel Jarre kicked-off the meeting, delivering a passionate speech on CISAC's ongoing commitment to "make a difference" amid a challenging climate of copyright reform.

"“The last year was an amazing ride” Jarre told the audience. We took the message of creators to WIPO in Geneva, to the UN in New York, to the European Parliament in Brussels. We took it to numerous places around the world where creator’s voices need to be heard,” he told the audience.

"Companies are building businesses, empires and fortunes, with the use of our creative output. And what do we get in return?

"Far too often, only crumbs from the banquet.”

Jarre highlighted the many challenges that creators face today, as the intellectual property legal framework and the system of collective management of rights continues to come under attack in many countries, including in Europe - the birthplace of copyright.
During his address, he also pointed to the fundamentals of authors’ rights protection, reminding audience members that the 'Universal Declaration of Human Rights,' adopted by the United Nations’ General Assembly in 1948, states that:

"Everyone has the right to the protection of the moral and material interests resulting from any scientific, literary or artistic production of which he is the author."

“These words were carefully crafted more than 75 years ago,” Jarre said.
 “I still find them completely and absolutely relevant today. The Declaration contains everything that we stand for here. It is about authors, and it talks about moral and material interests, the two values that we constantly attach to our creations. It also expresses more than anything that creators' rights are human rights.”

Jarre then outlined CISAC’s multipronged actions across all geographic regions and artistic repertoires in the fight for fairness:

“Our work has spread across all regions, all repertoires, and with the active participation of creators from all over the creative community,” he said.

At the close of his opening statement, Jarre received a huge round of applause.

Le Grand Monsieur Analogue - Studiobesuch bei Jean Michel Jarre

Wenn man mit Jean Michel Jarre über die Entwicklung der elektronischen Musik spricht, wird schnell klar: Nach mehr als 35 Jahren nach seinem Album-Meilenstein „Oxygène“ – lebt er noch immer mittendrin. Und viel lieber nennt sich der 63-Jährige in einem Atemzug mit Acts wie Air, Massive Attack oder Moby, als dass ihm offenbar der Begriff „Elektronik-Pionier“ so recht behagen würde.

Die Zentrale des Jarreschen Schaffens liegt ziemlich zentral in Paris, vis-à-vis der Seine. Kaum eingetreten, fühlen wir uns schnell wie in einem Synthesizer-Museum. ARP 2600, EMS Synthi AKS, Mini- oder Memorymoog. Korg PS- 3200 oder Elka Synthex: analoge Schätze, wohin das Auge blickt. Doch eigentlich gar keine gepflegten Museumsstücke, sondern voller Gebrauchsspuren. Unübersichtlich verkabelte Filter-, LFO- und Amp-Module, verschrammte Bedienoberflächen, mit dem Edding nachgezogene Parameterbeschriftungen, beschädigte Holzverkleidungen und jede Menge Phaser! Small Stones in so vielfältiger Ausführung hat man selten gesehen. In jedem der hier aufgebauten KeyboardSetups sind gleich mehrere zu finden. Mittendrin steht auch mal ein Virtuell- Analoger: Auf der zurückhaltend mit Bedienelementen bestückten Oberfläche des Clavia Nord Lead ist ideal viel Platz, um sie mit allerlei Setlist-Anweisungen für Parameter-Modulationen vollzukritzeln – wir selbst hatten das vorher noch nie bemerkt.
Keine Frage: Jarres Synthis werden zweifellos regelmäßig bespielt. Und das nicht nur hier im Studio in Paris. Der Grand Monsieur der Elektronik ist auch einer der analogen Tradition. Live auf der großen Bühne, wo’s geht ohne Computer, dafür umgeben von 60, 70 der analogen Oldtimer – und im Zentrum der Künstler, der seine Fans auch in Riesenhallen gerne per Handschlag begrüßt. So liebt Jean Michel Jarre es noch immer. Das hat er gerade erst wieder im vergangenen Jahr auf seiner jüngsten Europa-Tour klar gemacht. Über sich und seine Mitstreiter wird er uns später, bewusst zweideutig, sagen: „Wir sind wie ein Symphonieorchester mit Elektrizität.“

“Wir sollten nicht vergessen, dass die analoge und die digitale zwei ganz verschiedene Welten sind.“

Noch immer stehen wir staunend vor dem Arsenal an Synth-, Drumcomputer- und Sequenzer-Hardware. Techniker bei Jean Michel – das muss einer der härtesten Jobs der Welt sein … „No, no“, beschwichtigt Patrick Pelamourgues, der gerade um die Ecke biegt. Es scheint, als funkelten dem bescheidenen Synth-Crack – seit 1978 technische rechte Hand Jarres – förmlich die Augen, sobald er sich einem der Instrumente nähert. Patrick begleitet noch heute alle Jarre- Touren; denn er weiß genau, wie und wann welches Instrument am besten warmlaufen muss und nachzustimmen ist, damit es pünktlich zum Auftritt wieder zuverlässig arbeitet.
Hier in Paris hat er dann Zeit, alle AnalogDinosaurier vernünftig zu warten. Das geht bis hin zu aufwendigen Restaurationen, für die er Originalteile aus der ganzen Welt aufzutreiben im Stande ist. „Viele beneiden mich um meinen Job“, ist er überzeugt, und demonstriert uns schnell noch ein paar Oxygène-Sounds am EMS und ARP. Doch erst später, nach dem Zusammen – treffen mit Jean Michel Jarre, dämmert uns, was so unterschiedliche Persönlichkeiten – den zurückhaltenden Techniker und den das Millionenpublikum suchenden Elektronik- Mastermind – miteinander verbindet: Es ist ihre Seele, ihre Emotion, die beide in ihr Schaffen hineinlegen.

Jean Michel Jarre hat vor dem Mischpult im Nebenraum Platz genommen. Er wirkt fit, aufgeweckt; höflich, nett und nicht ein biss – chen unnahbar. Vom Rentenalter scheint er Lichtjahre entfernt zu sein. Dabei muss ihm die eigene Vergänglichkeit in jüngster Zeit oft allgegenwärtig gewesen sein. „Die letzten Jahre waren eine sehr emotionale Zeit für mich“, beginnt er, als wir ihm Fragen über aktuelle Projekte stellen.

In der Tat: Zwischen Frühjahr 2009 und Sommer 2010 verstarben nicht nur beide Eltern, sondern auch sein erster Produzent: Der Filmmusiker Maurice Jarre, der sich von Jean Michels Mutter scheiden ließ, als das Kind erst fünf Jahre alt war; der dann in Amerika seine Karriere startete, dort noch dreimal heiratete, eher sporadisch Kontakt zur Familie in Frankreich hielt und eine musikalische Zusammenarbeit mit dem Sohn später stets abgelehnt hat. Die Mutter Francette Pejot, die Jean Michel Jarre allein aufzog. Sein musisches Interesse verstand die Jazz-Liebhaberin auf ihre eigene Art zu aktivieren, in dem sie ihren damals schon Klavier spielenden Sohn an seinem zehnten Geburtstag in einen Club entführte, wo ihm Chet Baker trompetend gratulierte.

Und nicht zuletzt Francis Dreyfus. Unter seinem Label veröffentlichte Jean Michel Jarre nicht nur seit 1971 seine Alben, darunter die Welterfolge Oxygène (1976) und Equinoxe (1978); auch war er Mitorganisator des spektakulären ersten „Live-Happenings“ Jarres 1979 auf dem Place de la Concorde in Paris vor über einer Million Zuschauern. Oder des Aufsehen erregenden „Concerts in China“-Projekts, das den Franzosen als ersten westlichen Musiker nach der Mao-Zedong-Ära in die Volksrepublik führte.

„Im Moment arbeite ich wieder viel mit analogen Synthesizern“, berichtet Jean Michel Jarre. Das sei zwar schon seit dem Re-Recording von Oxygène anlässlich des 30.

Jubiläums der Produktion so, doch vielleicht haben gerade die jüngsten Schicksalsschläge das Besinnen auf die eigenen frühen Tage noch verstärkt. „Wir sind damit zu jenem Sound zurück – gekehrt, mit dem ich meine Karriere gestartet habe“, berichtet Jarre. Mit „wir“ meint er Francis Rimbert, Claude Samard und Dominique Perrier, die seit 2007 mit ihm auf den Bühnen stehen, um Oxygène wieder mit den Originalinstrumenten live aufzuführen.

„Da war plötzlich wieder diese Erfahrung: Wow! Das klingt einfach so anders, als wenn du nur digital mit Computern und Software produzierst. Wir hatten fast vergessen, welch einen Unterschied das macht“, schwärmt er über die guten alten Analogen im Nebenraum.

Ein Moog Modular, ein Yamaha CS-80 oder ein Mellotron sind für den Synth-Pionier „wie eine Stradivari“. „Sie sind mit Software einfach nicht zu ersetzen. Es ist etwas Grundverschiedenes, ob du an solchen analogen Klassikern schraubst oder versuchst, ein Poti am Mac oder PC mit der Maus zu drehen. Wir sollten nicht vergessen, dass die analoge und die digitale zwei ganz verschiedene Welten sind“, findet Jarre.

Soll das etwa heißen, dass früher alles besser war? Verschließt sich da gar jemand der technologischen Entwicklung? Nein, und nein! Und vor allem gerade nicht Jean Michel Jarre! Der Franzose ist bis heute ein Vordenker geblieben. Seine Konzerte funktionieren auch gerade deshalb als fulminante Massen-Events, weil der Elektromusiker schon immer multimedial gedacht hat. Während Jarre schon Ende der 70er fast besessen davon schien, die Visualisierung seiner Musik auch live mit immer neuer Lichtund später Laser-Technik voranzutreiben, schliefen die meisten anderen Künstler in dieser Hinsicht noch. Und bereits 2000 mischte er sein komplettes Métamorphoses-Album mit einer frühen Version von Pro Tools. Heute liebt er Softsynths wie zum Beispiel Spectrasonics Omnisphere. „Aber manchmal ist es einfach frustrierend, damit nicht so arbeiten zu können wie am Modular-Moog.
Ich erwarte deshalb für die nächsten Jahre auch einen deutlichen Fortschritt in der Entwicklung neuer Interfaces für die digitale Musikbearbeitung“, sagt Jarre, unser Gespräch übrigens schon die ganze Zeit auf seinem iPhone aufzeichnend – „Nur, damit wir auf der sicheren Seite sind.“

Der ARP 2600 in Jean Michel Jarres Setup ist mit einem externen Controller-Knob ausgerüstet, über den die Filter Cutoff-Frequenz gesteuert werden kann.

Apropos Apple: Ein iPad besitzt er auch, natürlich. „Ich schätze es sehr, zum Beispiel als Pro-Tools-Remote. Du kannst es überall im  Studio bei dir haben, wie einen kleinen Recording-Roboter. Aber ich finde nicht, dass Controller wie das iPad die 3D-Fader meines Mischpults ersetzen sollten.“ Warum eigentlich nicht? „Weil wir alle ‚Analog Animals‘ sind, die ihren Körper wohl auch in Zukunft nicht abstreifen, um zu einer Art Ektoplasma-Wesen zu werden. Zum Musikmachen brauchen wir unsere Finger, und Violine auf dem iPad zu spielen ist schlichtweg Nonsens. Etwas anderes ist es wiederum mit Instrumenten, die speziell für das iPad entwickelt werden. Es gibt da schon gute Sachen, aber umgekehrt sind aus genau diesem Grund die analogen Synthesizer Instrumente, die für sich selbst sprechen und daher weiterhin eine große Zukunft haben.“ Keine Frage: Seine persönliche Grenze zwischen analog und digital zieht Jean Michel Jarre heute sehr messerscharf.

Vor allem aber ist es eines, das ihn auch heute noch antreibt, sich live mit einer ganzen Armada an Analogsynths mit all ihren technischen Unzulänglichkeiten und individuellen Macken zu umgeben. Klar geworden sei ihm das unter anderem während der Restauration alter Analogtapes für seine Francis Dreyfus gewidmetes Doppel-Werk Essentials & Rarities – erhältlich übrigens auch auf Vinyl: „Der Sound ist wirklich außergewöhnlich – man hört förmlich die Wärme alter Transistoren.“

Am Bedienfeld des RMI-Synthesizers erkennt man, wie liebevoll Patrick Pelamourgues die Vintage-Synthesizer restauriert. Das Gerät ist ohnehin schon eine Rarität und sieht hier absolut neuwertig aus.

Die Wärme der alten Analogen – für den Künstler Jarre ist das eine entscheidende, emotionale Sache in der elektronischen Musik. Eine übrigens, die dem Massenpublikum seiner Ansicht nach lange Zeit verborgen blieb: „Weil sich die elektronische Musik anfänglich sehr ambivalent entwickelt hat“, holt er aus und erklärt sich: „Walter Carlos’ an sich großartiges Switched-on-Bach-Album (1968; die Red.) verfestigte den Glauben vieler, der Synthesizer sei ein Fake-Instrument, das nur dazu gedacht ist, klassische Instrumente zu imitieren. Dann kamen Gruppen wie Kraftwerk und Tangerine Dream, die ebenfalls brillante Alben geschaffen haben, die aber oft wie eine Apologie des Maschinellen, Roboterhaften wahrgenommen wurden. So gut das vom Konzept her auch war, so hat es doch nicht dazu beigetragen, Synthesizer als Instrumente zu betrachten, die Wärme in die Musik bringen und diesen Sound als emotionale Komponente weiter entwickeln können. Anfang der 90er wiederum wurde die elektronische Musik in Form von Techno und Dancefloor populär – auch hier dominierte wieder diese mechanische, roboterhafte gegenüber der emotionalen Komponente.“

Den Gegenentwurf sieht Jarre manifestiert mit Acts wie Air, Massive Attack, Moby – oder auch sich selbst. Jarre begreift sich dabei in der Tradition „der beiden Väter der elektronischen Musik Pierre Schaeffer und Karlheinz Stockhausen“. Sein Ansporn als junger Student aber sei die Idee gewesen, „Experimentalmusik mit Melodien und Popsound zu verbinden“.

„Wir wissen alle, dass elektronische Musik vielschichtiger ist und weit über Techno und Dancefloor hinausgeht“, sagt er heute. Jedenfalls sei das so, wenn die Persönlichkeit des Künstlers es zuließe. Dann nämlich werde klar: „Die Emotionen, die elektronische Musik transportieren kann, hängen weniger von den Instrumenten ab die du benutzt, sondern haben vielmehr mit dir selbst zu tun.“ Der warme Sound analoger Synths, gepaart mit der Persönlichkeit des Künstlers – für den Elektronik-Meister aus Frankreich ist das wie eine musikalische Zwangsehe.

Und Bezeichnenderweise ist dem Sohn des Komponisten epischer orchestraler Filmmusik Maurice Jarre dann noch eines besonders wichtig zu betonen: „Für mich kommt die elektronische Musik strukturell von der klassischen Musik – wobei ich das in der französischen und deutschen Tradition viel stärker so sehe, als es in der amerikanischen oder der britischen Szene verankert ist. Elektronische Musik hat eine komplexe Struktur, die auf derjenigen von Concertos oder Symphonien basiert – aber nicht diejenige von 3-Minuten-Songs.“

Creators React to MEP Reda’s Draft Report on Copyright, Calling for a Fairer Digital Market for Authors

Paris, France – 14 April 2015. Creators from all creative sectors and geographic regions have addressed the shortcomings in MEP Julia Reda's draft report on the adaptation of the Copyright Directive.

The report that was published in January 2015, tackled a number of sensitive issues in copyright reform, several of which directly impact creators.

CISAC creators outlined their views on the Report in a letter addressed to MEP Julia Reda and copied to all Members of the European Parliament, on the eve of its discussion by the Parliament.
The letter was signed by CISAC’s President Jean Michel Jarre and Vice Presidents Angélique Kidjo, Javed Akhtar, Marcelo Piñeyro and Ousmane Sow on behalf of the nearly four million creators that the Confederation represents.

The letter highlights the Report’s failure to address market realities for creators and underlines the need for a more balanced system that would take into account the rights of creators and provide fair remuneration for the use of their works.

"We agree that there needs to be a balance achieved between rights holders and the public. But this balance should not be struck at the expense of the increasingly fragile community of creators," wrote the signatories.

The letter questions some of the key proposals, in particular the approach to copyright exceptions and limitations solely from the perspective of user benefits, without considering the impact of so-called "free access" on the economic and moral interests of creators.

On the issue of the copyright term, creators rejected MEP Reda’s call for “a duration that does not exceed the current international standards,” effectively meaning a downward harmonisation to a term shorter than what is already available across Europe.

"We would be very interested in seeing the evidence upon which this policy recommendation is based," says the letter.
"Now that digital technologies can help facilitate access to, and preserve our works, forever, an extension seems more justified than ever."

In their conclusion, creators urged Ms. Reda "to do what’s right" by ensuring the future of creators in Europe and supporting "a fairer digital market for creators."    

The letter was sent to MEP Julia Reda and copied to all MEPs who participate in the JURI committee.
That committee is due to commence its discussions on the report today.
